The land along this stretch of the river is without empathy. It did not mourn for the inhabitants who disappeared, the ones whom the roots came out of the ground and made prey of. Blind roots that searched by touch. The roots which bored through the soil, came up, and seized the natives. It wrapped round legs, and then twisted up torsos, winding round them–and squeezed the life from them like pythons. Then the land was bound to the living men, and the land fed off their blood. Look at this place, just look at it. It is a plague of cold, fog, tempests, disease, exile, and death–death skulking in the air, in the water, in the bush. These forgotten men died like flies here. And if we anchor here so shall we.

Pogo Stick Glory

My Pogo-Stick, Personal Word Record– Immortalized

 

I, Hanson Anderson do hereby swear–under penalty of death by a firing squad – that the following claim is true in every possible conceivable aspect. If any detail is falsified- then may I be shot 10 times in the chest, at close range.
–So help me, Mrs. Dash.

In 1978 I achieved my all-time personal record for consecutive, non-stop-hops-on a pogo stick. The official hop count was 1,002. There were no witnesses to this eternal classic 30 minutes in the field of Pogo jumping. But I would never lie about a jumping- related sporting event.

After this insuperable personal triumph, I then retired from amateur-competitive pogo and pogo-ing related sporting events. I never hopped again. I wanted to go out on a high note. As that is what true champions do.

The pogo stick is bright orange and is available to the public, on permanent exhibit, for general admiration and viewing. The Huffy Model 29BK Pogo stick (with handle bar streamers) is housed in my parent’s garage–safely guarded behind a velvet rope. Of course, this velvet rope is hooked to a chrome pole.

Admission to the pogo exhibit is free. In addition, for $3.50 I will unhook the velvet rope, stand aside, and you may have a relative photograph you, while posing with your arm and shoulder around the pogo stick, smiling .
